The Malaysian Parliament form part of the legislative body. According to Article 44 of the Federal Constitution , the Parliament shall consist of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong , the Dewan Rakyat ( House of Representative ) and the Dewan Negara ( House of Senate ). Members of the Dewan Rakyat is known as Members of Parliament ( Ahli Parlimen ) meanwhile members of the Dewan Negara is known as Senators. Laws are enacted by all three bodies. The YDPA is an integral part of Parliament and his assent is required for all laws except in circumstances stated in clause (4A) of Article 66 when the Royal Assent is deemed to have been given after the expiry of the specified time. His role as the Constitutional Monarch ( Raja Berperlembagaan ) does not permit him to be an active participant in parliamentary proceeding. The YDPA attends on ceremonial occasions such as the opening of parliamentary sessions and delivers the Royal Address to a joint sitting of both chambers outlining government of the day policies. YDPA parliamentary duties such as summoning, proroguing and dissolving parliament. In discharging YDPA duties , YDPA acts on the advise of the Prime Minister.
The General Election usually will be held avery four to five years, and it stand dissolved by operation of law at the end of five years calculated from the date of its first meeting. It is dissolve on the advice of the Prime Minister . On the dissolution , all seats of the Dewan Rakyat become vacant to give way for general election. However the Dewan Negara , the senators who retire base on rotation.
